"At The Doorstep of the 21st Century"

[The following is the text of a covering letter from the Curriculum Branch of the New Brunswick Department of Education which accompanied this presentation when it was distributed to High School Guidance Counselors in October of this year.]

At The Doorstep of the 21st Century is a resource being provided to school guidance counsellors in career development activities and transition planning.  It contains a video, with supporting documents, of a presentation given to a small group of New Brunswick high school students.  Using New Brunswick labour market information, presented in a series of charts and explanations, the correlation between employment and post-secondary education/training is explored.

This resource has been supplied by the Federation of New Brunswick Faculty Associations.  While it directly supports their interests in post-secondary education, there is no question of the strength of the correlation between employment and educational attainment level.  However it is important to recognize that it is the process of continual learning which is reflected in these statistics.  Learning takes place within many contexts and the ultimate message to students must be of hope as the result of self-reliance and commitment.

This material will also be of interest to other teachers as it would be relevant to other subject areas, i.e. economics, entrepreneurship, statistics, cooperative education, career and life management, etc.  Please bring it to the attention of any who may find the information useful.  As the video, in its entirety, may not be appropriate to all audiences who may benefit from its information and message, it should be previewed to determine how it and the supporting materials may best be put to use.
